December 2008

The mama here again, exploiting Calder’s blog for my own motives. I have been terrible about keeping any sort of baby book for either of my children. I have neglected to record most of Calder’s milestones and cutenesses. Since this blog has become the best record we have of our kids’ lives, this post is mostly for me.

Calder has become quite a scientist lately. He is always wanting to do “unvestigations” and scientific “speriments” and frequently requests that we talk about “science things like volcanoes and gravity and evolution.” In the last few days he has become interested in our five senses. He is a little confused about them, but always manages to get his point across. Yesterday he kept talking about his “sense of ear smell” after much questioning, I finally realized that he was talking about his sense of hearing. There is nothing I enjoy more than the grammar and vocabulary of preschoolers. It is such a great demonstration of how they are understanding the world and of the connections they are making. This is one of those funny phrases I don’t want to forget– he knew he was talking about a bodily sense involving his ears and just went for it to get his point across.

Last night Calder had a hard time falling asleep. I can remember nights like that when I was his age and I would toss and turn for no reason. Korum was teaching drum lessons last night, and I really needed to use the time to work on cooking dinner for a little New Year’s Eve gathering we are hosting tonight, but instead of cooking, I spent an hour-and-a-half going back and forth between the boys settling and calming them. At one point, when they were both trying to sleep in the same room, Calder came out and told me that I should move Garner (who was sound asleep) to the bassinet in my room. “I can’t sleep because Garner is distracting me with his cuteness,” he said. Oh man, I hope I remember this someday when the boys are older and not so enamored with one another, and what a sweet cause of insomnia.

I will leave you with a photo of the sleepless boy, finally asleep at 10 PM sitting upright in a chair in the living room. Note the beloved Christmas baseball which hasn’t left his side in several days– thanks Uncle Harper.

It’s the mama here… popping in to wish all of our readers (all 3 or 4 of you… “hi mom”) the warmest of holiday seasons. We have had a wonderful couple of weeks full of snow play, baby cuddling and toe nibbling, Hot Wheel races, Christmas crafting, book reading, cookie baking, Swedish food eating, and family togetherness. We are feeling happy and blessed and wish the same for you.

Calder will update the blog when he gets a chance, but right now he can’t be pulled away from his Speed Racer slot car set, Transformer helmet, volcano making kit, and whoopie cushion. For now I will leave you with a link to Uncle Karl’s photos from Christmas night at Pappy and Nannie’s house.

We wish you all peace and prosperity in the new year!

This has been a really wild week.

Last Sunday it snowed and it was so so so fun. When I waked up I had breakfast and then went to the school across the street to go sledding. There was just enough snow! When I was there I saw my friends Lola, Pop and Ivy and we sledded together for 2 hours. Then we all went to my house and had hot cocoa and played with the baby. Then all day we baked different kinds of Christmas cookies. MMMMMM. Yummeh in my tummeh!

Then he just sleeps.

Then the snow never goed away but more came on Thursday and more on Friday. Dad stayed home on Friday and we had Daddy-Dodi Snowfest 2008. We went sledding in the morning. Tried to make a snowman but had a snowball fight instead. Then we walked all the way down our hill to the treehouse cafe for steamed milk with vanilla, whipped cream and chocolate sauce! Then we walked to Walt’s market for milk, bread, ice cream, medicine, and Doritos for a special treat. Then we tied a string to our sled and pulled our groceries all the way up the hill to our house. The walk took over 2 hours! But at least I got vanilla milk and doritos and worked on my muscles.

Tomorrow we’re going to my aunt Leslie and uncle Karl’s for an early Christmas which I am so so so excited about. But there is supposed to be another big storm coming with more snow so we’re not going to stay long. Maybe I’ll get to have another snow day!!!!

Hi Ken! My dad, mom, brother and I hope you’re doing well. Say “hi” to Peter Pan for me!!!!!

Here’s a video of me sledding with Lola, Pop and Ivy and carrying our groceries up the steep steep hill:

The concert was so good! Dan wore a bright pink suit and played lots of instruments. He has so many friends! And they’re all so beautiful and talented! They played the best music too. Music from all different cultures and parts of the world and they all shared each other’s traditions and were so happy to be together. We were happy to be there with them and I got to dance, dance, dance!

the party is just getting started.

Thanks for the great day, Dan!!!

Saturday was a pretty good day. First I woke up and had 2 warm milks. You see, I always like to have 2 warm milks when I first wake up. They are sooo yummy in my tummy.

Then I showed dad the new gate to our vegetable garden which is made out of old tractors and was made by an artist named Dick Strom who my dad is making a website for.

Then my daddy had to teach drums for a while. When he was all done we GOT TO GET OUR CHRISTMAS TREE! We looked around for a little while until we found the perfect tree. Then daddy let me cut it down… all by myself. It was so SO big and I said “timber!” when it fell down.

TIMBER!!!

TIMBER!!!

After we go the tree we went to the Bainbridge Island Studio Tour where I got to go see Mima and give her a hug. My Mima makes really beautiful jewelry. Sometimes, when I go at her house, Mima lets me go into her studio and use her special tools like hammers and stuff.

Then, NEXT… we went to Nanny and Pappy’s to get our Christmas ornaments out of their attic. We stayed and had yummy cheese pizza and strawberry yogurt.

After that we went home and put on holiday music, tried eggnog (YECH!), and decorated our tree. I had lots of fun putting ornaments on the tree but I liked to put all of them in the same place. Then, when it was all done, I got to put the star on top of the tree with dad’s help, just like Little Critter.
